Bleeding Hearts | Steven Isserlis, cello

Merry Pranks | Mahan Esfahani, harpsichord

The Orpheus 92Y series ends with Merry Pranks, including Richard Strauss’ rendering of a fabled trickster, played in a lively arrangement for chamber ensemble. The Iranian harpsichord virtuoso Mahan Esfahani juggles tradition and disruption in neoclassical marvels by Falla and Martinů, and Mozart’s brilliant Quintet for Piano and Winds (K. 452) wears the garb of a chamber symphony in a reworking by Jean Françaix. It’s a season full of fresh sounds and surprising looks for Orpheus, but still the oldest principle in this self-guided ensemble remains constant: to approach each and every interpretation with fresh ears and clear sightlines, so that anything can happen in the moment.
