MENDELSSOHN    A Midsummer Night’s Dream, incidental music, Op. 21 and 61
(arr. Tarkmann)

Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and The Classical Theatre of Harlem join forces to present A Harlem Dream, a stirring rendition of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with vivid allusions to New York City and the Harlem Renaissance.

A hundred years ago, the Harlem Renaissance brought together the Great Migration, The Jazz Age, Women’s Suffrage, The Roaring Twenties, the concept of the New Negro, a flowering in art, an explosion in the worlds of letters and music, and vaulting aspirations in the African-American community.

Now, the four young lovers spin drama alongside the Duke, the Father, and the forest spirits of Central Park. Mendelssohn’s beloved score sings alongside works by Duke Ellington, as an enchanting, magical orchestra lays the foundation for the world-class cast performing this classic tale.

Directed by Peter Francis James with projections by Katherine Freer, this enchanting evening will awaken the senses and bring you to your feet as the spirit of Shakespeare’s most mythic play takes hold in the heart of Harlem.
