A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to bring Latin influences into American Jazz. Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of twelve, but it didn’t take him long to catch the excitement of the jazz world. He has since evolved into one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugelhorn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer.

He is one of the most dynamic and vivacious live performers of our time, and has been seen by millions at the Oscars, at the Grammy Awards, and the Billboard Awards.

Sandoval has been awarded 10 Grammy Awards, and nominated 19 times; he has also received 6 Billboard Awards and an Emmy Award. The latter for his composing work on the entire underscore of the HBO movie based on his life, “For Love or Country” that starred Andy Garcia as Arturo. His two latest Grammy award winning albums, “Dear Diz “Everyday I think of you” and Tango “Como Yo Te Siento” are now available worldwide. Arturo Sandoval's newest CD, Eternamente Manzanero. Performing the music of revered Mexican romantic pianist/singer/songwriter, Armando Manzanero, this is a true labor of love. Performing Senor Manzanero's music with co-headliner Jorge Calandrelli, the album is a fresh, modern and pleasant take on his beautiful bolero music.

Recently released, is a new book chronicling his relationship with Dizzy Gillespie entitled “The Man Who Changed My Life” Arturo also is the 2013 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Sandoval was a founding member of the Grammy Award-winning group Irakere, whose explosive mixture of jazz, classical, rock and traditional Cuban music caused a sensation throughout the entertainment world. In 1981, he left Irakere to form his own band, which garnered enthusiastic praise from critics and audiences all over the world, and continues to do so.

Sandoval is also a renowned classical musician, performing regularly with the leading symphony orchestras from around the world. Arturo has composed his own “Concerto for Trumpet & Orchestra”, which can be heard on “Arturo Sandoval: “The Classical Album.” Arturo has performed with the foremost orchestras in the country as well as abroad and recorded John Williams’ Trumpet Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra. His classical artistry has earned him the respect and admiration from the most prestigious conductors, composers and symphony orchestras worldwide.

Arturo Sandoval’s versatility can be heard on recordings with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Woody Shaw, Michel Legrand, Josh Groban, Tony Bennett, Bill Conti, and Stan Getz to Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Rod Stewart and Alicia Keys amongst many others. He has performed with John Williams with the Boston Pops, and in the Super bowl with Tony Bennett and Patti LaBelle.

His compositions can also be heard in movies including “1001 to 1” starring Beau Bridges, “At Middleton” starring Andy Garcia and Vera Farmiga, Dave Grusin’s soundtrack for “Havana” and “Random Heart”, in the “Mambo Kings” soundtrack with his Grammy nominated composition “Mambo Caliente”, in the soundtrack of “The Perez Family”, “61”, “Mr. Wrong”, the documentary “Oscar”, and “The Family Fuentes” among of others. He also was commissioned by the Kennedy Center to compose the music for the ballet “Pepito’s Story”, “Soul Possessed”, as well as “Oman O Men”, and “The Chocolate Hot Nutcracker, choreographed by Debbie Allen. And as mentioned above, he was awarded an Emmy for his composing work on the entire underscore of the HBO movie based on his life, “For Love or Country” starring Andy Garcia.

Arturo Sandoval reaches beyond the scope of mere effort. His struggles while in Cuba and since his defection have given him more energy and strength, urging him to accomplish and surpass his childhood dreams. Filled with a virtuoso capability, he desires nothing more than to share his gift with others who feel the same intense adoration for music as he does. Praised for his “dazzling technique and rhythmic fire” in the Seattle Times and dubbed a “formidable virtuoso” by The Times of London, Cuban pianist and composer Aldo López-Gavilán excels in both the classical and jazz worlds as a recitalist, concerto soloist, chamber-music collaborator, and performer of his own electrifying jazz compositions. He has appeared in such prestigious concert halls as the Amadeo Roldán (Cuba), Teresa Carreño (Venezuela), Bellas Artes (Mexico), Carnegie Hall and Jordan Hall (U.S.), Royal Festival Hall (U.K.), Nybrokajen 11 (Sweden), The Hall of Music (Russia), and Duc de Lombard et Petit Journal Montparnasse (France), as well as venues in Canada, Santo Domingo, Colombia, Spain, Greece, Hong Kong, Burkina Faso, Germany, and Austria.

Aldo López-Gavilán was born in Cuba to a family of internationally acclaimed classical musicians, his father a conductor and composer, his mother a concert pianist. At the age of five, he had written his first musical composition. By four, his mother introduced the budding prodigy to the piano, and he began formal piano studies at the age of seven. His first international triumph was at the age of eleven when he won a Danny Kaye International Children’s Award, organized by UNICEF. He made his professional debut at age twelve with the Matanzas Symphony Orchestra and later went on to perform Prokofiev’s Third Concerto with the National Symphonic Orchestra of Cuba. Parallel to his classical abilities, López-Gavilán developed remarkable skills in improvisation. He was invited to perform in the world-famous Havana Jazz Festival with the legendary Chucho Valdés, who called him “simply a genius, a star.”

His recording career began in 1999 with the CD “En el ocaso de la hormiga y el elefante”, which won the 2000 Grand Prix at Cubadisco as well as awards in the jazz and first-works categories. In 2005, he was invited to join a group of prestigious Cuban pianists to create an album and documentary in honor of Frank Emilio, “Amor y piano”. He was also included in a DVD set, “Cuban Pianists: The History of Latin Jazz”.

López-Gavilán’s second album, “Talking to the Universe”, was a success with audiences and critics alike. In 2006, he gave a concert of his newest works that was later turned into his third album, “Soundbites”. Two years later he was included in a documentary on the history of Latin jazz in Cuba titled “¡Manteca, Mondongo y Bacalao con Pan!”, directed by Pavel Giroud. It was in that same year that he recorded his fourth CD, “Dimensional”, which allowed him the flexibility for more musical experimentation. He was also hired to compose the music for a TV documentary titled: “El Proceso: la historia no contada.” In 2009 he released his fifth album, “Aldo López-Gavilán en vivo”, and finished his first live concert DVD, “Más allá del ocaso”, which included orchestral selections and jazz compositions. He also composed original music for the film “Casa vieja” by acclaimed Cuban director Lester Hamlet.

During the past decade, López-Gavilán’s collaborators have included some of the greatest artists in the classical, popular music, and jazz fields. The late Claudio Abbado, one of the world’s most celebrated and respected conductors, invited him to perform with the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela in 2006, in a special concert dedicated to the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth. Maestro Abbado subsequently invited him to perform Prokofiev’s Concerto No. 1 in Caracas and Havana.

In 2009 López-Gavilán was invited by popular Cuban singer-songwriter Carlos Varela to join his band for a tour of Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay; Aldo’s acoustic arrangements of Varela’s music won many accolades from critics and fans. In 2010 he joined the São Paulo Jazz Symphonic Orchestra to perform his music in a concert that was recorded and broadcasted on national television in Brazil.

López-Gavilán’s Carnegie Hall debut took place in November of 2012, when he was invited to participate in the hall’s prestigious “Voces de Latino América” festival. That same month he played a two-piano concert with his colleague Harold López-Nussa in Miami. In May of that year he released his sixth album, “De todos los colores y también verde”.

In 2014 López-Gavilán toured the U.S., appearing at Florida’s Miami Dade County Auditorium, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the San Francisco Jazz Festival, and he completed an ASCAP film music workshop under the direction of Robert Kraft at New York University. He also toured extensively in Europe, South America, Canada, and the U.S. with Carlos Varela, for whom he wrote all the string arrangements for an award-winning documentary (The Poet of Havana) that won many awards and was televised for several months by HBO Latino in the U.S.

A milestone in López-Gavilán’s professional and personal life came in early 2015, when he joined the New York-based Harlem Quartet—co-founded by his brother Ilmar, the quartet’s first violinist—for concerts in Calgary, Seattle, and Phoenix. That same year he was invited to play with his Jazz Quintet at the Centro Cultural Kirchner in Buenos Aires, Argentina; performed Rhapsody in Blue with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá, Colombia; and closed the year with a sold-out concert at the Teatro del Museo de Bellas Artes in Havana.

His partnership with Harlem Quartet continued in the summer and fall of 2016 with a U.S. tour that included concerts and residencies at the Rockport Chamber Music Festival, Chautauqua Institution, Santa Fe College, Las Vegas’s Smith Center for the Performing Arts, the Chamber Music Society of Detroit, and the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Arts in Beverly Hills.

Since December 2014, when a new era in the relationship between the U.S. and Cuba was announced, Aldo played a continually active role in the cultural exchange between the two countries. In April 2016, through Obama’s President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, he was part of the group of Cuban musicians who collaborated in Cuba with such renowned U.S. artists as Joshua Bell, Usher, Dave Matthews, and Smokey Robinson, A few weeks later López-Gavilán’s music was used to showcase Chanel’s Cruise 2017 Collection—the first fashion show to take place in Havana in recent times—and he partnered with American trumpet virtuoso Byron Stripling in a concert at Havana’s Teatro del Museo de Bellas Artes.

Under the lead of famous Grammy Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell, Aldo aided in the organization of “Seasons of Cuba”, a PBS Special that took place at the Lincoln Center in December 2016, celebrating a new era of cultural diplomacy with a vibrant program that spanned from Vivaldi classics to Piazzolla tangos and beyond. Some of the prestigious artists joining Bell and López-Gavilán were Dave Matthews, the Chamber Orchestra of Havana, singer-songwriter Carlos Varela, and soprano Larisa Martínez.

During 2016 and 2017 Aldo continued headlining sold-out North American performances in various venues all over the United States, both as a solo artist and with the Grammy winner Harlem Quartet. In the prestigious Napa Festival in July 2016 Aldo rejoined with popular violinist Joshua Bell for his Seasons of Cuba concert at Far Niente Winery and that same month he premiered “Emporium”, his first concerto for piano and orchestra, at the Tahoe, Nevada with The Classical Tahoe Orchestra and conductor Joel Rezven.

In early 2018 Aldo continued his extensive tour in the US and made his debut with the Florida Orchestra with three amazing concerts on February 23, 24 and 25 in the Florida cities of Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the symphony and making these his first collaboration with prominent British conductor Michael Francis. A few weeks later Aldo returned to Florida, this time to play the Concert for Piano in G major by Ravel during four concerts with The South Florida Orchestra conducted by Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso, and the local media praised him for his “…warmly lyrical, effortlessly virtuosic performance…” noting as well that the “…Cuban pianist lights a fire with South Florida Symphony”

In the fall of 2018, Aldo made history by becoming the first Cuban pianist to play at Piano aux Jacobins, a highly celebrated Piano Festival in Europe. Founded in Toulouse, France in 1979, the festival has welcomed some of the best-known pianists in the world, such as: Sviatoslav Richter, Alfred Brendel, Martha Argerich, Gonzales and Murray Perahias. Aldo’s outstanding performance at the Auditorium Saint-Pierre des Cuisines on September 21st won him not just a very long-standing ovation but also an invitation from the organizers to come back to Toulouse to record an album next year.

Aldo kickstarted the year 2019 with three remarkably successful concerts, performing George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater, FL in early January with The Florida Orchestra under the direction of maestro Thomas Wilkins, a former resident conductor. He continued with his extensive North America touring agenda during the spring, that brought him to venues in Covington (LA), Chicago (IL), Montreal (QC), Napa (CA), Boston (MA) and Colorado Springs (Co). He also performed with his jazz quartet and a renowned group of guests at the iconic Teatro Marti in Havana, Cuba. The concert was filmed for a concert DVD and streaming Special: “Aldo Live at Teatro Martí”.

During the summer of 2019 Aldo and his brother Ilmar got to fulfill one of their long-standing wishes: to record an album together. Aldo wrote some new material for this special occasion while Ilmar took care of arranging Aldo’s music for Piano and Violin format. The results is “Brothers”, an amazing album comprising 11 tracks, which they plan to support with some live concerts in the near future.

Aldo and his brother Ilmar are featured in the documentary “Los Hermanos / The Brothers”, tracking their parallel lives and momentous first performances together despite the geopolitical divide. Featuring a genre-bending score composed by Aldo, performed largely with his brother, and with guest appearances by violin maestro Joshua Bell and Ilmar’s Grammy-winning Harlem Quartet. The documentary is screening at film festivals worldwide and will be nationally broadcast on PBS in the fall of 2021.

During the fall, Aldo continued touring in the US but also performed in Bogotá, Colombia and in Paris and Angoulême, France where he presented “Playgrounds”, a solo piano album released by French record label Espirit Du Piano. This album represents a new stage for him as a composer and brings together a very wide range of musical universes, from jazz to world music, including Afro, experimental music and Cuban sounds and rhythms. More generally, this album was conceived in an approach to the creative process that is at once calmer and more profound. Aldo’s musical landscape is always very varied and eclectic, and Playgrounds is no exception to the rule.

In November 2019, Aldo was honored as the composer in residence at Habana Clásica Festival’s third edition. Many international known musicians performed Aldo’s compositions in a very wide assortment of formats and instrumentations.

Aldo and his jazz trio made their Canadian debut in March 2020, with two memorable concerts: one at the Isabel Bader Centre in Kingston, ON and then one at The Jazz Bistro of Toronto. These were the last two live concerts Aldo played before COVID-19 turned into a pandemic and we saw the world turning upside down. During this difficult time Aldo continued composing and performing for his fans in Cuba and worldwide, taking part in several virtual concerts, such as the star-studded concert curated by Festival Napa Valley: “One Night, Many Voices” featuring artists like Joshua Bell with soprano Larisa Martínez; tenor Michael Fabiano; soprano Nadine Sierra; pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet; and the sensational Young People’s Chorus of New York City. Aldo closed the event with a swinging jazz performance performing with his band direct from Havana.

Gregg August
Arranger

Bassist and composer Gregg August spans the classical, avant-garde, jazz and Latin jazz worlds making him one of the most versatile musicians on the scene today. He is an Associate member of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra as well as a member of the American Composers Orchestra and Orchestra of St. Luke’s. Gregg is also the former Principal Bass of La Orquestra Ciutat de Barcelona and the Brooklyn Philharmonic.

As a jazz bassist Gregg is a member of the JD Allen Trio, having recorded 9 albums with the group, as well as Arturo O’Farrill’s Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, with whom he’s won 5 GRAMMY awards. In 2003 Gregg formed his own record label, Iacuessa Records, for which he has recorded four critically acclaimed albums of entirely his own original music: Four by Six ( 2014), One Peace (2007) and Late August (2005).

In August of 2020 Gregg released Dialogues on Race (Iacuessa Records). The album received a GRAMMY nomination in the Best Large Jazz Ensemble category. An extended suite for a 12 piece large jazz ensemble, three vocalists, strings and narrator, the work deals with the subject of race relations in the United States. He utilizes poems by Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, Marilyn Nelson and others to create a musical conversation that is intended to help bring awareness and foster understanding on the issues surrounding race.

Gregg was awarded two Grand Prizes by the International Society of Bassists for the 2020 David Walter Composers Competition in both the Chamber Ensemble and Bass Ensemble categories. He has also composed many full length concert works, including “Una Rumba Sinfonica,” a commission from the Jazz Composers Orchestra Institute and Earshot, which was premiered by the Buffalo Philharmonic.

Gregg has performed and/or recorded with The New York Philharmonic, Steve Reich, The Bang on a Can All Stars, Alarm Will Sound, as well as Ornette Coleman, Chick Corea, Branford Marsalis and Ray Barretto. Gregg was on the Downbeat Magazine Critics’ Rising Star Poll in 2017, 2015 and 2013.
An adjunct professor at New York University and Williams College, Gregg has also been on faculty at the Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival at MASS MoCA (North Adams, MA) since 2003.

Gregg received his bachelor’s degree from the Eastman School of Music and his master’s from the Juilliard School.

Javier Diaz

Javier Diaz is a percussionist and composer active in the New York Area. He has performed with the American Symphony Orchestra, Orpheus, Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, New Jersey Symphony, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, New York Perspectives Ensemble, Zankel Hall New Music Band, Hilliard Ensemble, Broadway's productions of Man of La Mancha, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Phil Collins’s Tarzan, Guys and Dolls, The Wiz, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Rocky, In The Heights, Lion King, Gloria Estefan’s On Your Feet, the 2017 Tony Award winning revival of Once on This Island, and the 2019 Tony winning production of Ain’t Too Proud, The Life and Times of The Temptations. His studio/film soundtrack credits include collaborations with jazz greats David Sanborn and Marcus Miller, ECM's Tituli by Stephen Hartke with the Hilliard Ensemble, Barbershop 3, several HBO films, and many TV and radio commercials.

As an Afro-Cuban percussion specialist, Diaz has appeared with: Miami Sound Machine, David Sanborn, Marcus Miller, Sean Kingston, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight, Chaka Kahn, Patty LaBelle, Lazaro Galarraga's Afro-Cuban All Stars, percussionists Angel Luis Figueroa, Candido Camero, David Yazbek, Román Diaz and Pedro Martinez, The Panamerican Jazz Band, The Ethnix, Anette Aguilar’s Latin Jazz Group, Marta Topferova, Edmar Castañeda, Tribal Sage and the New York World Music Institute. In addition, Mr. Diaz’s has recently released an album with world music group Kalunga.

An active educator, Diaz has taught concert percussion at El Sistema de Orquestas Juveniles e Infantiles de Venezuela, University of Connecticut and at his private studio in New York City. He has also taught Afro-Cuban music seminars, classes and clinics at the Peabody Institute, University of Southern California, Percussion Artists Workshops Los Angeles/New York, Los Angeles School District, The Juilliard School, the Boston Conservatory and Mannes School of Music in New York City. Diaz is currently on the percussion faculties at New York University, Rutgers University, the Juilliard School and Queens College. His book on Afro-Cuban percussion, The Afro-Cuban Handbook, has become a classic of the percussion literature.

Mr. Diaz has composed music for the Aspen Music Festival, New York University and University of Southern California. His concert music is currently available at javierdiazpercussion.com. Mr. Diaz has also written and arranged music for different groups and ensembles, including Kalunga, Orpheus, Ará Okó, and Tribal Sage.

An alumnus of El Sistema de Orquestas Juveniles e Infantiles de Venezuela and the Aspen Music Festival, Mr. Diaz holds a BM from the University of Southern California, a MM from The Juilliard School, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the Graduate Center (City University of New York).

Jannina Norpoth
Arranger

Grammy-nominated violinist Jannina Norpoth, made her debut as a soloist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra at age 14. Since then she has built a career as an innovative collaborative artist with a passion for contemporary music, genre bending and improvisation, a sought after arranger and orchestrator, and an advocate for a more inclusive and versatile landscape in classical music.

Her string quartet, PUBLIQuartet, is recognized for unique and genre inclusive programming, earning them the 2019 Visionary Artist Award from Chamber Music America, 2015 Adventurous Programming Award from ASCAP and Chamber Music America and New Music/ New Places Prize at the 2013 Concert Artist's Guild Competition.

Deemed "Leader's of the New School" by Symphony Magazine and "Independent Minded" by The New Yorker, PUBLIQuartet has served as an ensemble in residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and National Sawdust, performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Detroit Jazz Festival and The Colbert Report, creating Requiem for Debate a live improvised sound track for the third Presidential Debate. Compositions from their programming concept MIND | THE | GAP: which melds musical genre's through improvisation were dubbed "ingenious hybrids" by Strad Magazine. PUBLIQuartet was recently featured as Keynote Speakers for Carnegie Hall’s educational conference PlayUSA for which they composed and performed a newly commissioned work written for the event.
